Symmetrics Takes Early Lead in Burnaby Six Day

six day

The first night of racing is complete at the Burnaby Six Day, and Symmetrics Cycling has taken an early lead over rivals Slipstream Sports, Successful Living, and Healthnet.

Slipstream was plagued by series of mechanicals in the second Madison. First, Friedman rolled a tubular during an exchange and went down hard, leaving Pearce to cover anything that Symmetrics could throw at him. Then Friedman's seat broke, which required two more trips to the infield and some duct tape to fix. Slipstream did well to only lose one lap to Symmetrics!

The trooper of the night award goes to Brad Huff (LA Lightning) for having to ride 140 of the 160 laps in the second Madison, after his partner, Crosby, went down hard in an exchange only 20 laps into the race, and was not able to return to racing.

Flying 200m

The night started off with the flying lap. The LA Lightning duo of Cosby and Huff set an early fast time of 11.31s, which stood until last years champions Tuft and Bell took to the boards. Bell flew through the lap in 11.15s for first place. Top 3 was rounded out by the composite team of Mackenzie and Chater.

Team Elimination

Next up was a full field elimination. All 24 riders took to the track, with the last rider and his partner pulled every 5 laps, until 3 teams remained on the track. The rivalry between the top 4 teams became evident, as the Symmetrics, Slipstream, Successful Living and Healthnet battled to stay at the front and take maximum points in the race. Healthnet was the final team to be eliminated, leaving Bell, Tuft, Friedman, Pearce, Meier, and O'Reilly to set themselves up for the final sprint.  In a fast final sprint, Bell took first place, with Freidman taking second place and O'Reilly taking third place.

100 Lap 5 x 20 Madison

The first Madison of the night was a 100 lap 5 sprint event. Slipstream and Symmetrics took a lap on rivals Successful Living and Healthnet. Slipstream took the first two sprints, with Symmetrics taking the 3rd and 5th sprints.

six day

160 Lap 8 x 20 Madison

The second Madison saw Symmetrics extend their lead over Slipstream, Healthnet, and Successful Living. A series of mechanicals for Slipstream required Pearce to ride almost 50 laps on his own while Friedman changed a rear wheel and then had to repair his saddle using duct tape. Healthnet displayed their sprinting prowess, taking 4 of the 8 sprints during the race, and placing in all of the sprints. Symmetrics was able to take a lap on Healthnet, Slipstream, and Successful Living, putting them in first place overall.

LA Lightning's Huff was forced to ride 140 laps solo, as his partner, Crosby, crashed hard early on in the race and was not able to return to racing.

Slipstream took first place in the first Madison of the night and the one-rider Elimination race, while Symmetrics took first place in the second Madison of the night and the one-rider 40 lap points race.

Play of the Day award goes to Christian Meier of Successful Living, for avoiding a crash by diving into the infield, driving through the rider pit, back onto the track, and straight up to his partner riding high on the banking.

Symmetrics Still Holds 2 Lap Lead Over Slipstream Sports after Night 4

six day

After an exciting night of racing involving 2 madisons and 2 individual rider races, Symmetrics Cycling still maintains their 2 lap lead over Slipstream Sports. Both Healthnet and Successful Living has fallen another lap down, now showing 4 and 6 laps off the leaders.

The first Madison of the night was taken by Symmetrics. Both Symmetrics and Slipstream were able to put one lap on Healthnet and Successful Living during this race. The second race saw Friedman of Slipstream ride to victory in the 1-rider Elimination to Scratch race. The next race was a full Elimination race, with O'Bee of Healthnet taking the win.

The big performers of the night were the US National team of Holloway and Silva. This motivated duo was able to put a lap on the entire field during the 200 lap Madison. This was a very important move for them, as it brought them on even laps with Team dEVo, and moves them into 5th place overall, displacing dEVo on points.

The extended Friday night schedule has 3 madisons and two one-rider races. Sprinters will also take to the boards, and will be duking it out in the Elite keirin rounds.

100 lap 10 x 10 Madison

The first Madison of the night saw Symmetrics and Slipstream Sports take a lap on Healthnet, Successful Living, US National and dEVo.

Elimination to Scratch

The first 1-rider race was a 50% Elimination to Scratch. 6 riders were eliminated in the standard miss & out format, and then the final six riders completed a 20 lap scratch race. Friedman (Slipstream) was relentless in his attacks, forcing Healthnet and Successful Living to chase for the entire 20 laps. Friedman took the win, with O'Reilly of Successful Living in second.

Elimination

The second 1-rider race was a standard Elimination race, pulling down to 3 riders. O'Bee of Healthnet rode a strong race, taking victory of Huff of LA Lightning and Silva of US National.

200 lap 10 x 20 Madison

The final race of the night was a long 200 lap 10 x 20 madison. Four nights of racing seems to have mellowed the group a little, with 5 teams staying together for the entire race. The Team of Holloway and Silva were tenacious in their pursuit of gaining a lap on the field, and were successful in this after a long effort of about 40 laps. Team dEVo, trying to preserve their 5th place standing, made a valiant attempt to defend against this attack by US National, but to no avail. The lap by US National moves them into 5th place overall over dEVo.

Symmetrics Protecting 2 Lap Lead over Slipstream Sports

six day

The Burnaby Velodrome was a full house on Friday night. The bleachers and the infield were filled to capacity with cheering, excited race fans as Symmetrics and Slipstream battled through the evening. At the end of the night, Symmetrics still maintained their two lap lead on Slipstream Sports and their four lap lead on Healthnet, and extended their lead on Successful Living by one lap, after an early crash by O'Reilly forced the team to lose a lap before O'Reilly was able to return to action.

Symmetrics took the Scratch Madison and 160 lap Madison tonight, while Slipstream claimed victory in the 60 lap Supersprint Madison and the Tempo race. Proman won the 1-rider scratch race.

Racing will finish up tomorrow night, with three Madison races on the cards, giving Slipstream one last chance to challenge Symmetrics for the 2008 Burnaby Six Day Champion title.

60 lap 5 x 12 Supersprint Madison

The first Madison of the night had an escalating amount of cash available at each sprint. Healthnet picked up 2 sprint prizes, while LA Lightning, Slipstream, and Symmetrics each picked up one. Slipstream won the event on final sprint placing over Healthnet, as both teams were tied on points.

six day

Scratch Race

The first 1-rider race was a 40 lap Scratch. Several early attacks were reeled in, but an attack by McCook of Proman with 4 laps remaining caught the group sleeping and he put almost a half lap on the field before they responded. McCook was able to hold off the charging group, with Successful Living out-sprinting the bunch to take second.

Tempo Race

The second 1-rider race was a Tempo race, with 2 and 1 points for 1st and 2nd rider each lap. Both Slipstream and Healthnet took a lap on the field, putting them in first and second, with Symmetrics Cycling placing third.

Team Elimination to Scratch Madison

The next race of the night was a Team Elimination down to six teams, followed by a 20 lap scratch Madison for the remaining teams. All the top teams avoided elimination, with Symmetrics coming out on top after Bell stormed the group in the last lap.

160 Lap 8 x 20 Madison

The final race of the night was a 160 lap Madison. Slipstream attacked Symmetrics hard during the race, trying to regain one of their lost laps. For a time, it looked like the attack had worked, as Bell and Tuft seemed to go through a ‘spot of bother' and Slipstream was putting distance on them. Rallied by the cheers of the capacity crowd, Tuft stormed around the track in chase of Slipstream, and was able to catch the Americans. Symmetrics took the race win on points, with 1st place finishes in 4 of 8 sprints. Slipstream and Healthnet stayed on the same lap, and took 2nd and 3rd.

six day

US National put another lap on the dEVo youngsters and look to be riding better with each passing day. The team almost took a lap on the entire field, making it three-quarters of the way around the track, before Slipstream and Symmetrics ratcheted up the pace and brought them back.

LA Lightning received a replacement rider today, as Brian Crosby retired from the race after Thursday nights racing with an injured elbow. Texan Andrew Armstrong has taken Crosby's place for Friday and Saturday nights racing action.

Proman's McCook was forced to abandon tonight due to an injury sustained earlier in the week. McCook's partner, Kilun, was forced to ride solo for the majority of the Madison, which resulted in a loss of 11 laps to the leaders.
